Portugal has been voted the best golf destination in the world at one of the most prestigious tourism events, reports theportugalnews.com.
The 2013 World Travel Awards Grand Final serves to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across the global tourism sector, also pointing holidaymakers in the direction of the best places to travel.
Held at La Cigale Hotel in Doha, Qatar, the 'Oscars' of the tourism industry was celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Worldtravelawards.com says the event was attended by CEOs of leading travel companies, tourism board chiefs and government ministers from the nominated countries, who gathered to see Portugal scoop the top prize in the category for World's Best Golf Destination.
Portugal went on to claim a further five golden statuettes following its 15 nominations. This was a huge improvement on last year, when the country walked away with just two awards.
This year has brought much praise for Portugal's best golf courses, as the country was also voted Europe's Best Golf Destination for 2014 by the International Association of Gold Tour Operators (IAGTO).
Considering customer satisfaction, the quality of golf courses and value for money among various factors, the panel opted for Portugal over the likes of the Scottish Highlands, the French Riviera and the Gran Canary.
